How to change fonts in android devices

Android is a highly customizable mobile OS. We can do a lot of customization in android phones like changing themes,  icons, fonts, customizing status bar, etc. Android users generally get bored of using same style in their phone. The default Roboto font looks good but every user has a different choice. We can change android’s stock look by changing fonts in few seconds.

Many users want to customize their phone but don’t want to root. Fonts are installed in system partition and changing system files require root (superuser) permission. However this is not true for every ROM. Samsung, cyanogenmod and many other custom ROMs provide options to change theme and fonts without rooting.

If your phone doesn’t support custom fonts and you don’t want to root your phone then you can change launcher fonts by using go launcher or any other launcher which provides font support.

Requirements:

  • iFont
  • Rooted phone or phone with custom font support

There are many other apps available in play store and xposed repository to change fonts but I found iFont to be the best among them. You can also give a try to apps like HiFont, Fonter, etc. HiFont doesn’t work properly and doesn’t change all fonts, for example launcher and status bar fonts may remain unchanged. If you find any app better than iFont then feel free to share it with others in the comment section below.

Steps to change fonts using iFont:

Step 1: Install iFont from play store and select your favourite font. You can select recommended fonts or you can select fonts from FIND tab.

1 select font

Step 2: Tap DOWNLOAD button to save font in your phone

2 download font

Step 3: Tap SET button to apply new font in your phone

3 set font

Step 4: Tap OK to confirm changing font. Your phone will soft reboot automatically after applying font.

If you’re using cyanogenmod or any other ROM with theme/font support then after tapping OK it may ask you to install font apk. Make sure that installing apps from Unknown sources is enabled in Settings -> Security. After installing font go to theme manager and apply font theme.

4 setting font

If you didn’t liked new font or font failed to install properly then you can restore your default font from MY tab in iFont app. You can also apply previously saved fonts from My Download in the same tab.

Restoring factory font:

Step 1: Open iFont app and go to MY tab and tap Factory Font

5 my font

Step 2: Select Backup font or Internal font and tap OK. Your phone will soft reboot to restore factory font.

6 restore from internal
